City of Fernley Flood Update

UPDATE FOR ALL FLOOD DISPLACED FERNLEY RESIDENTS

Fernley, NV – January 6, 2008 – Currently, Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA) Teams comprised of state, local, and FEMA representatives will be conducting evaluations of the flooded areas over the next several days. This is an important step in the process to request a Presidential Disaster Declaration.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation has indicated to the City that there will be no diversions from the Truckee River into the canal until the Bureau has determined that it is safe to do so.

Displaced residents not yet registered with the Red Cross are asked to register at Fernley High School . Both Fernley and Red Cross representatives will be there to assist with the registration.

Tomorrow, Monday, January 7, 2008, representatives from the State Insurance Division will be on hand at the Fernley City Hall to answer questions and provide assistance to residents affected by the flooding.

Displaced residents are encouraged to maintain records of all expenses associated with their temporary relocation. Additionally, photographs should be taken of all damaged property for insurance purposes.

Fernley schools will be closed tomorrow Monday, January 7, 2008. Schools will reopen Tuesday the 8th.

Dumpsters have been made available for cleanup efforts at Out of Town Park on Farm District Road and Hwy. 50 at the paved parking lot in front of the Little League fields.

Regular garbage disposal service for the effected area is on schedule, however several streets (Crimson, Opal and others) may be inaccessible due to localized standing water, and the City has set up dumpsters at Green Valley Park for your use. Additionally, for flood victims the City has free dump vouchers for the Fernley Transfer Station. You may be pick vouchers up in the City Manager’s office Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
